Project Coordinator - 100 Hours of Astronomy Cornerstone Project

Background

The 100 Hours of Astronomy cornerstone project (100HA) is a worldwide event with a wide range of public outreach activities including live webcasts, observing events and more taking place during a 100-hour period in early April. 100HA is one of several global projects initiated directly by IYA2009 and is managed for the IAU by Astronomers Without Borders, a US-based charitable corporation. Job description
The Coordinator will implement programs for 100HA as specified by, and under the supervision of, the 100HA Task Group. The Coordinator will organize and supervise a team of volunteers, manage web site content, participate in the creation of fliers, brochures, posters and other information resources, communicate with national and local organizers worldwide, respond to inquiries, meet with potential sponsors and otherwise assure the development of programs and resources. Essential skills include verbal and written communication in English, proven ability to working with people and organizing team efforts.

Hours and Salary
This job is available immediately and will exist for approximately six months, ending at the end of April. Work can be part-time or full-time. The successful applicant will work as an independent contractor for salary only. Salary is to be negotiated and will be commensurate with relevant experience. Future employment opportunities may be discussed at the end of this six-month appointment.

In the ESA/Hubble science communication office you will work with a small team of professional science communicators in preparing ESA/Hubble news and photo releases, publications, web pages, video scripts, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and other public communication activities.

Requirements:

  • Experience in science communication
  • Fluent or very good English
  • Very good MS Office applications skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Very good communication skills
  • Reasonable basic knowledge of astronomy
  • Can work independently
